Before completing my undergrad degree in Psychology, I began considering what I’d like to study next (yes, I’m one of those nerdy types who loves to learn!)

Luckily, one day, bolting  across campus to gather information on both the LSAT and requirements for secondary teaching certification, I ran into one of my former professors.  He told me a little bit about his research in the Ed. Psych Department.

He was overseeing a Graduate Program with a specialty in Cognition.  After hearing just a brief description, I knew it was what I wanted to do next.

“Educational Psychologists who concentrate their work in these areas try to better understand the factors that influence performance and how to affect positive change.”  Quoting this description from the department itself, you can probably see how this became part of the foundation upon which I would eventually build the Sugarluxe Brand. 

Having spent two years prior to graduation helping to conduct research with another professor in the area of Abnormal Psychology, I was really looking to switch gears.  It was my last year of undergrad that most greatly impacted my direction.  I was assigned to work at a hospital about an hour and a half south of town.  I reported to the psychiatric wing once a week.  We were doing a study on schizophrenia.  I was the only female research assistant (and barely 20 years old) on an all-male patient ward.  I remember the overwhelming feeling of apprehension the first time I walked through those double doors.

But after acclimating to the unrelenting cat calls, it was a weirdly rewarding and life altering experience.  Namely because of one patient.

I don’t even know if this man knew I was there.  I sat next to him.  I observed him.  I tried having countless conversations with him.  But he never responded to me.  He wasn’t catatonic, he was just a bit delusional and suffering from severe hallucinations.  The deal was…he would draw the entire time.  He was quite an amazing artist and when he finished each sketch, he would talk to it as if his drawing had come to life.

Despite having a fairly profound disturbance, I found him to be fascinating and inspirational.  In fact, he affected me so deeply, I realized, I wasn’t cut out for that kind of work.  I was afraid I would never be able (and never want) to desensitize myself.

Instead of focusing on what was wrong with him, I wanted to figure out what was right. 

What had happened to this man?  Who were the people he portrayed in his art?  What motivated him to draw?  Was he always compelled to create?  How did it help him to cope with life?  Could we use his talents to facilitate treatment?

CRAZY IDEAS
Back then, I would have never dreamed that I would get to live my life doing what I do. 

In all honesty, I think I was a little scared that people might think I was delusional for thinking I could be an artist.  Or that I could build a company with very little money, based on artwork that had never been seen by anyone, with no connections in the art world, no formal art training and with the intent to spread a message of hope and optimism, especially at a time when that was so clearly against the status quo. 

Maybe THAT’S crazy?!

Just as I imagine it must have somehow helped my patient, creating art has helped me to cope with pain, confusion, and frustration.  The fact that I’ve chosen not to depict those feelings as part of the artwork itself, and merely as part of the therapeutic process it provides, doesn’t make it any less profound.  There’s far more there for those who look below the surface.

MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE
That’s why I’ve anxiously awaited the opportunity to implement a Sugarluxe Girl profile quiz. Even though there are probably thousands of quizzes on Facebook now, this one actually does have years of thought, understanding and analysis behind it.  Its influence is a product of my work itself.  The personalities that are infused into the art are drawn from the very people who continue to inspire each and every piece I make.

Part of my mission has always been to comprehend the complexity of the positive characteristics that make up our personalities and how those attributes contribute to our sense of self.  The way that I’ve tried to do that is by simplifying those wonderful traits into something visually iconic.

FUN on FACEBOOK
Does that sound too lofty and idealistic for a simple Facebook Application?  I hope not.  It takes less than 5 minutes and it’s also FUN!

I have a blast meeting up with friends/fans on Facebook.  I love seeing what you’re up to, learning about your families, looking at photos and watching the massive amounts of support that people provide one another there. 

Plus, I’d bet people agree – I’m actually a lot more light-hearted than I probably sound here.  This blog is like my diary and facebook is more reflective of my daily life. I guess it just depends on where I am at any given moment.

But that’s really my whole point.  Like the pictures that I paint, we have so many layers, don’t we?

The BRAND NEW Sugarluxe Website is live, lookin’ good and I sure hope you LOVE it like we do!  If you’re on our private VIP list, you already know about the improved site.

If you stumbled onto Sugarluxe for the first time this past month, you already know about it too…and because we outperformed all forecasts for new traffic and direct sales, even in slumpy economic times, I think every single minute of the 784 hours to complete the migration is going to be totally worth it!

Few people know that our original site was all hand-coded.  We didn’t have a shopping cart platform and the site didn’t pull from any pre-fab templates.  That means every single page (over 900) had to be changed one at a time if we wanted to add a product or category, or make any updates to the navigation.  It was such a nightmare.

Not to mention, the back-end was totally chaotic.  In retrospect, I don’t know how we handled our volume of sales with such little automation.

But the idea of developing a new site right before the holidays was a nothing short of insane!  A week into the project (back in October), it looked practically impossible to go live by December.  For some ridiculous reason, my life is full of self-imposed deadlines that make me nutty.  I think I might work on doing that a little less in the New Year.

Yet, when it comes right down to it…the foundation of this company was built upon the importance of signature imagery and usability.  Whether we are talking about product development or a website overhaul – it can’t just look fantastic, it has to be functional.

It was time for an update.

Despite the intense amount of work, I am so, so happy that we are now on such a sophisticated, user-friendly software system.  It’s heavenly!

Here are some of the things that I am just so excited about:

1. We’ve built a back-end customer database so anyone can create a personal Gift Registry.
2. We finally have a site-wide search mechanism with thousands of programmed terms.
3. Our shipping is fully integrated, so you can log onto your Sugarluxe Account for tracking.
4. We’ve designed a breadcrumb trail in all categories for much easier navigation.
5. We now have the functionality for every customer to provide their opinion with Product Reviews.
6. Sugarluxe Partners can now log in to see their special pricing without waiting until checkout.
7. We now offer Sugarluxe Gift Certificates in multiple denominations for convenient gift giving options.
8. We’ve posted new product lines including the SMART Collection Cufflinks and Collectible Paper Prints.
9. The entire Sugarluxe Website loads much more quickly…saving you time when shopping.
10. Specials are so much easier to update, so we will be offering many more deals to our VIPs!

Today, it’s pretty easy for someone who wants to launch an online store to start within a matter of days.  Technology has come a long way.  With portable shopping widgets, blog plugins, sites like Poketo, Etsy, Zazzle, and more…anyone can sell their stuff online.  But even with progress and all these portals, I still believe that if you want to create a real brand…you SHOULD build your own retail website (at least in addition to your pages on the crowdsourced sites).

My vision has always been to compete with some of the biggest shopping sites online.  Not in terms of sales (although that wouldn’t suck). I’m not aiming to be the size of Nordstrom or Neiman Marcus, but that doesn’t mean I won’t try really hard to emulate the experience.

Like most of the undertakings at Sugarluxe, this was no easy task.  But I hope you find that as we continue to grow, we make every single improvement with you in mind.

I feel pretty good about all of the enhanced features, the project was certainly a good investment.  But the best part is – I’m actually now a firm believer that if you build it – they will come!

Don’t you love cool little cufflinks? I think they’re totally sexy and for something so small, they sure can make a big statement. Huge compliments to avid cufflink collectors.  I really like accessories that provide a little insight into an individual’s personality. 

Cufflinks do that. 

So, I’ve been trying my hand at making cufflinks for almost a year and a half. In fact, I have cufflink prototypes (hundreds of pairs) strewn about the studio and stashed in drawers.  Part of the fun for my friends to come into the studio is trying to get a sneak peek at the multiple experiments I have going on at any given time…

In today’s world of manufacturing and overseas sourcing, it’s rare that a company will manufacturer and sell their own products.  It’s cost prohibitive and for the most part, I don’t know if people even care anymore about where something is made.

But I do.

I find satisfaction in doing both manufacturing and distribution. I can have control over quality and I get the opportunity to connect directly to customers.  I think that’s the best of both worlds.  But maybe that’s just me.

I enjoy taking ideas and turning them into something tangible.  I like developing the prototypes, working with so many materials, and figuring out how to perfect a process.  Art to me is more than painting or illustrating…it’s about creating something out of nothing.

But guess what?

Ideas are the most insignificant part of the process.  Millions of great ideas (or at least I think they’re great) run through my mind ALL day long.  I can’t stop them.  I often can’t sleep because of them.  Everybody has ideas…the test is whether you can successfully execute your idea.  Can you turn an idea into reality?

People tell me all the time…well, I want to be the idea person…I need somebody else to do the actual work.  What?  I sure hope you have a load o’ dough and even then, unless you’re already a celebrity, it’s kind of absurd (Don’t believe me?  Watch the episode of Real Housewives of Atlanta – with the woman who fancied herself a fashion designer, but didn’t know how to sketch, sew, or choose her own fabrics!) What a mess…

Yes, my way requires more work.  Bummer.  But its armed me with a competitive advantage.

I’m not an inventor, but I try to be pretty innovative.  That’s why, when I started Sugarluxe…I didn’t go the traditional route, t-shirts and greeting cards are the very first products to which most artists gravitate.  Why?  They are relatively inexpensive to produce and there are very few barriers to entry. 

I wanted to design cufflinks.  They are certainly unexpected.  Different.  And harder to do.

Blending in is not the goal.

It feels nice to be noticed…to stand out in a crowd.  I hope our new cufflinks make people feel the same way.  That does take a certain amount of confidence, sure.  But isn’t that what we’re really talking about anyway?

However, as with every optimistic point of view, there is a potential pitfall. I definitely understand first hand, the frustration felt by so many artists and designers today:

Do something original, create a popular style, product, or design…try to remain independent, do it yourself, be proud of your entrepreneurial spirit, and then work your butt off to make and market it…chances are, somebody will rip it.  Mostly big labels, but today, even indies are waiting to see what works and then jumping on board. FUGH!

I try to not let myself get caught up in that junk. Those worries become debilitating.  If I gave it any more thought, I wouldn’t spend this time sharing my experience. I’d keep it all to myself because as always, someone is waiting in the wings thinking not of what this post is really about – being unique – but rather, hmmm…how can I make cufflinks, too?

I have more of a problem with big manufacturers, though. The time spent on R&D makes it pretty hard to replicate for most small companies. But jeez, I’ve seen this happen all over the place. 

Etsy is the perfect example.  It’s become a virtual hot bed of crafter copycat fights. As a self-appointed social scientist, I’ve been quietly watching this site evolve (or not?) since its inception. I’m always curious as to whether my predictions will be completely off base or right on the money.  My hypothesis here?  Communities like this breed a lot of clones.

HOLD ON…just drop your glue guns and no one will get hurt.  

I’m not saying there isn’t a ton of talent there…but for cripe sakes (my mom has always said that and I have no idea what it means but it sure makes me laugh) the last place I’d go with a great new product is to a place overflowing with people who can, might, and probably will knock you off.

Ahhh well…it’s none of my business.

To the significant circle of people who always pay close attention - Here’s my next secret for you:  Stay one – or one hundred – steps ahead at all times.  Whether you choose to start collecting really cool cufflinks or you want your business to be a huge success (I, of course, would like you to do both)…start by figuring out, not how you’ll fit in, but rather, what will make you stand out.

If I had started a blog prior to completing the Sugarluxe Room (504) for the Hotel Des Arts…I can only imagine what I might have written during the process.  It was exhilarating, grueling, exhausting, freezing. And toward the end of the project, it was sort of a blur. 

On the second to last day, I do remember calling Patty Williams, my lifesaver holding down the fort (studio) back home. I was teary-eyed, tired and sore. Patty is not only incredibly smart and sweet, she happens to have a Masters Degree in Social Work, which comes in handy when you’re feeling blue.  How lucky am I that this is the second time I’d hired Patty.  First in my former life at a corporation and then later into my own company.  Patty is amazing and I love her.

And even when I was 1,000 miles away, she was and is always there for me. It was one of the coldest winters in San Francisco. More importantly, I received a phone call from my folks in the middle of the project to tell me that my dear 20 year old cousin, Elliot Arnold, passed away in his sleep - no one knew why.  I was beyond devastated and during the last days of painting, I was in a daze from the unbelievable news. I could barely hold my paintbrush…my hand would shake and my fingers were numb. It was not an easy time to be filled with creative energy. But like everything I cherish in life, I realized that the things which require the most work, can end up being the most rewarding. 

The Hotel Des Arts is like that for me.

And the Sugarluxe Room is dedicated to Elliot.  So, obviously, it’s important to me on many levels.

To some, it might just seem like a good place to show off your art if given the great opportunity.  It is.  The hotel features the work of some of the most prominent, cutting-edge artists alive today.   

To others, it may seem that the art is disjointed and doesn’t look upscale enough to compete with the W Hotel down the street.  It can’t.  It won’t.  Thank God!

Which is why I love this place so much.

You can connect to the heart (emphasis on the art) and soul that is core to this boutique hotel.  It is alive with ideas, passion and purpose created BY people FOR people who appreciate the independent spirit that fills every inch of this place.  It is not ultra-fancy, but there is nothing else like it.  And that’s why every time I head back to San Francisco, this is EXACTLY where I want to stay.

The recent NEW ART ‘08 SHOW presented by START SOMA afforded me an excellent opportunity (excuse) to go back (as I do several times a year) but this particular show fell on the date of my 5 year wedding anniversary…and because we hadn’t had a vacation since our honeymoon (thanks to our never ending work schedules)…my wonderful guy and I contemplated getting away to a place where we could get some much needed R&R.

As we considered all of our options, the zillions of places we could go, we still chose to visit all of our friends, artists and the cool people at the Hotel Des Arts.  I guess we could’ve gone to SFO and stayed somewhere else in town…maybe a romantic little B&B.  But we didn’t want to.  Why?  Because staying at the Hotel Des Arts rocks!

Let me clarify something though…I don’t get paid to say this.  I don’t get commissions on the bookings (although that is a fabulous idea because during my latest trip there, the owner/hotelier Rich Singer said that the Sugarluxe Room is the most requested room to date!!)  Maybe that’s because I am always raving about it.  But still, it’s fantastic to stay right in the middle of everything.

The hotel is located in Union Square right across the street from the main gate into Chinatown.  It’s down the street from the Financial District and one street away from the BEST shopping in the city.  It’s a mere $5 cab ride to the pier and 15 steps to the closest bowl of Bulgogi.  Don’t love Korean Food like I do? That’s cool, there are hundreds of other amazing restaurants within blocks of the hotel.  The escargot in the little French restaurant next door is to die for too.

True. The rooms are fairly small. If you’ve done much traveling in Europe, you are more accustomed to this.   But if you want something super affordable, you want to be in the best location, and you don’t plan to stay in the room the entire time, it’s so worth it.

Another awesome thing worth noting…many people have written to say that they weren’t staying at the hotel but wanted to see the Sugarluxe Room.  The staff always tries to accommodate you if the currently booked guests would allow them to give a peek and so, many times even when you are not a guest of the hotel, you can go get a quick tour.

My experience might be skewed.  When I walk in the door, I get treated like a total Rock Star.  Admittedly, it’s an amazing feeling to get that kind of welcome and one that makes you quite fond of all who shower you with such affection.  That might not be the same reception everyone gets…which if it were…would not make me feel any less special, but regardless – there was a point in time at which I was completely unknown to the staff and I still had great service. 

So, for my 5th Anniversary, I had the most wonderful time possible. 

The art show was so much fun.  John Doffing – the genuis behind the hotel’s concept and the START SOMA Gallery treated us to more good times and more great meals than I could have dreamed.

I was able to visit with many friends and see their newest works. And the manager even reserved the Sugarluxe Room for us…which every time I go back, I must confess, I’m a little nervous to see.  I’m the type who wants to always change or improve something and can’t ever leave well enough alone. 

I could do more to the bathroom or fix the wall that used to be hidden by an old armoire and is now exposed because it was replaced with a new flat screen tv. 

But I’m trying really hard to learn to be content.  Kind of like with my own body…every thing seems to need a tweak here or a wrinkle removed there…but my art and I are trying to grow older gracefully…

Oh yes, and for those who don’t know about my longtime fascination with carnivals, funnel cakes and cotton candy, just thought I would share the inspiration behind the Sugarluxe Room.   This is from the carnival that comes and sets up twice a year right down the street from my studio and the trailer of goodies that delight my senses (artistically and otherwise)…  

Yummy!

Taffeta?  Check.

Baby tee?  Check.

Black tennies with teeny little skulls that look like cherries?  Check.

Flower in hair because I will never stop loving flowers in hair?  Check.

And oh yes…artwork installed?  Check.  Interns on time?  Check.  Interview on TV?  Check.  Art lovers everywhere for big Sugarluxe Show?  Check.

Hail balls the size of sno-cones?  Um…

I checked…the Weather Channel said 96 degrees and sunny all day.  Sugarluxe?  She say bad words under breath at massive hail balls.

Waaaaaaauuuugghhhhhhh!!!

Well, it was supposed to be perfect weather (except maybe for the 100% humidity making the 96 degrees feel like 110) but hey, we were moved inside and we worked our BUTTS off to create this showcase. 

As you know, it was a charity benefit for the Austin Children’s Shelter and the weather wasn’t going to stop us from selling every single painting. 

Or…was it?

We started the show opening early just for mid-day shoppers.  However, the special events director thought it would be better for us to save our energy for the 6-9pm crowd.  I really didn’t mind hanging out and mingling all day…as long as we were ready for the 7 o’clock rush hour later. 

The Sugarluxe girls looked like beautiful little rosebuds despite loading in tons O’ crap that morning…I was ready to sign magazines, hug lots of people, kiss sweet smellin’ babies and sell large scale works of art (most - NEVER before available pieces) in an effort to raise awareness and money for ACS…

And then this…Large Hail and Dangerous Lightning Hits the Austin Metro Area.

But alas, if you thought it was all sweet here in candyland (or if I somehow fooled you into thinking that way) then it’s time to come clean…some days just SUCK!!!!

However, if I can at all help it, we try to make sucky situations better.  I used to get so frustrated with my mom who has ALWAYS pointed out the bright side to EVERYTHING.  Now, I realize that the bright side (thank you MOM!) is a perspective that aids survival. 

Here’s the bright side of Saturday:

My interns are about to graduate, so we can’t help but be excited about that. I did get time with friends who I hadn’t seen in ages (and typically, I never get time to talk to them at our shows). I saw, held and kissed many babies (self-pity alert: a bit harder right now considering I am going on FIVE years of no two pink lines on my pregnancy tests).  And we did sit with jaws dropped when we watched the band disappear and people fleeing the show in droves as they dodged huge chunks of ice falling from the sky (we were seriously concerned about people’s safety and our cars) but when things feel a bit hopeless…you can either laugh, or you can completely lose your mind. 

So, what can a group of really disappointed girls do?

What else? Get a glass of wine and toast to good times.

That’s how it is around here.  Many things never work out as we plan.  But we DO try to make the best of it.  Stuff happens every day making us want to pull our hair out…but I’m trying to learn that some things just can’t be helped.

As a control freak  perfectionist  person who wants everything to be a major success, sometimes, it’s just hard to admit that things like, you know, weather, getting pregnant, and sold out shows are not completely up to me.

Luckily, when we were doing the installation for the show, the fabulouso Central Market asked if I would be willing to have the art in there for 6 weeks!

ABSO(freakin)LUTELY.

Now, after weathering Saturday’s storm, I am even happier that the good people at Central Market responded to the work so well as to ask us to display/SELL (subliminal message to buy) over the next couple of months…giving us WAY more time to help raise money for the abused children who need this shelter and care from the wonderful people who work there.

Whenever I seem to disappear…you can usually bet we’re working on something pretty exciting at SUGARLUXE!

Not only are we weeks away from the soft launch of a new collection into one of the largest retailers of “better home goods” (and it’s still kinda secret or I would tell you more)…but we were absolutely determined to pull it off at the same time as a major art show.

Saturday, May 10th marked the 1st Annual Art & Soul Showcase featuring Sugarluxe Art to raise money and awareness for victims of child abuse. Central Market  hosted the event and we couldn’t have been more pleased to be brought into a venue recently named:  “the top gathering destination in the city”.

In fact, up to the very last minute, I was stressing over the completion of new large scale Artist Proof pieces and to make them available at this show FIRST. That means that a few are 1 of only 15 proofs on canvas.  PLUS – everything sold benefits the Austin Children’s Shelter.

The GREAT news is — you don’t have to be in Austin to get these pieces.  Even though they are on display in this big fabulous store in Central Texas, they can be purchased and shipped nationwide!

Here are some important reasons why we created this showcase:

1. The Austin Children’s Shelter recently lost their much needed funding from the United Way.
2. More than 50% of children under age five who are victims of homicide are killed by a parent.
3. One out of every seven victims of sexual assault reported to law enforcement were under the age of six.

I have been an avid supporter of ACS and it is beyond my comprehension that anyone could ever hurt, abuse or neglect a child.  Actually, it hurts my stomach so much, that every time I was trying to get through the unbelievable amount of work I had on my plate…I stopped to remember why it’s so important to do what each of us can.

Whether you donate your time, talent, money or all of the above…every little bit helps when it comes to making a difference in the lives of vulnerable children.

But girls ripping each other apart for the sake of 1) winning 2) a man 3) their 15 minutes of fame…goes against everything I stand for. So why do I secretly record every episode and then watch in delight as females fight tooth and nail over Bret Michaels?

Um, well…I guess because in my heart of hearts, I cannot deny it. I was, am and will always be a rocker chick. The musician obsession started when I was about 8. My parents hoped that I would grow out of it. I never did. I can’t help it.

I’ve also dated two Doctors, a Lawyer, a Baseball Player, a Morning DJ, and a Duke (okay, I didn’t officially date The Duke)

One night in Toronto, downtown with my girls, I met a guy from The Royal Family. Somehow, we all ended up back at his brownstone. Whilst showing me his art collection and discussing his cottage in the country (cottage meaning sprawling estate) I had a cocktail or four in an attempt to cope with my feelings of inferiority. Due to the unavoidable intoxication that ensued, I cried out in front of everyone that he was clearly a “condescending art snob.”

So let this be a lesson to you too, should you ever encounter the opportunity to become a duchess…

Moonshine and Monet don’t mix.

My best friend, Karen, will definitely chime in if I get the details wrong. Even with my lack of diplomacy, I think The Duke asked me to marry him that night. On his knee in the middle of the street…he apparently fancied me as a feisty starving artist type. Earlier misgivings aside, I quickly considered how cool I would look wearing a crown.

Karen, fearful that the whiskey would make me do something I might regret, hurled me into a cab and I waved goodbye. To The Duke. To the cottage in the country. And for a long while…to my dignity.

Returning to my homeland, I realized, I was meant for a musician. Every other guy I had dated between the ages of 15-25 – a musician. Guitar players were first choice, singers second. Guitar players who sing? JACKPOT!

That’s how I met Bob. Bob Michaels.

He was playing on stage. Oh MY GOD. Singing, playing his ‘69 Gibson Guitar with girls crawling all over him. Yup, that’s my type. After two tumultous years, we called it quits. I was devastated. But in retrospect, I’m glad it ended when it did because that was actually the beginning of our true friendship. We became best friends over the next ten years. It’s a long gooey story, but since my last name is Michaels, you can probably figure out how it goes. We were made for each other. It just took us a long time to figure that out.

Bob is a talented musican and brilliant business man. He is a risk taker and he gives me the freedom and the emotional support to be one too. It’s not an easy life we’ve carved out for ourselves. Two entrepreneurs in separate, but creative fields with no guaranteed paycheck and working in different studios on what might as well be opposite ends of the world. We don’t get to see each other enough, but every time I come home, he greets me with the same two seemingly simple words – Hi Sugar!

And in an instant, I fall in love all over again. I can’t help it.

So, after years of creating artwork inspired by and for women. This is my first piece made for a man. My man. My true Rock of Love.

You know those tasty little packets of turbinado crystals you stir into your morning coffee? That sugar is like this blog.  A little less refined, with a lot more flavor.

Fact is, a blog was beckoning. Flaunting its potential for mass appeal and ability to instantly gratify, I begged the idea to leave me alone. After all, and perhaps surprising to some, I am a VERY private person.

I guess I’d always hoped that what I was showing was enough. The artwork, the press, the products all provide a glimpse into the making of America’s Sweet Art: the delicious imaginary land of Sugarluxe with its candy-coated shell.

But after so many MySpace messages and countless emails asking about what I do, I finally realized that people often want as much in the way of how and as they do about the who.

My boob flopping out on the red carpet would leave me feeling less exposed.

Talking about how or why I do the things I do?  Yeah, okay.  It’s just that it’s much easier to tell you my favorite color. Which is aqua if you’re asking. But it seems more is required.  WHY GOD? Whyyyyyyy?

I’m not sure yet where this year will take me, but it’s the first time that I will actually talk about all of it. The good AND the bad. Completely raw. Full disclosure.
